Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute (Earlier known as Government Central Textile Institute), Kanpur is a premier textile institute of North India. It made a modest start in 1914. However, in 1937, Govt. Central Textile Institute came into existence in its present form by merger of two premier textile institutes i.e., one at Kanpur and the other at Roorkee, Department of Textile Technology, Thomson Civil Engineering College of Roorkee and two diploma programs were started therein.

In the year 1958 four-year degree Programs in Textile Technology & Textile Chemistry were started. Initially and the Institute was affiliated to Agra University but on establishment of the University in Kanpur in the year 1966, it got affiliated to Kanpur University. In the year 1976 the institute pioneered in starting a four-year degree programme in Manmade Fibre Technology. Later on, three-year diploma Programmes were shifted to Government Polytechnic Kanpur in the year1985 and thereafter the institute has been running graduate and postgraduate Programmers with Ph.D. research facilities. The 4th degree programme in Textile Engineering was added under World Bank aided Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme of Government of India and Government of State of Uttar Pradesh in 2005.

  • 1923: Govt. Textile school of Thomson Civil Engg. College, Roorkee, was shifted to this campus.
  • 1937: They were merged and renamed as "Government Central Textile Institute", offering 3 years Diploma in Textile Manufacturing and Chemical Technology.
  • 1958: B.Tech Textile Technology & Textile Chemistry (Agra University) started,
  • 1966: Affiliated to Kanpur University,
  • 2000: Affiliatedto Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, formerly Uttar Pradesh Technical University.
  • 1976: B.Tech Man Made Fibre Technology started.
  • 1985: M.Tech (part-time) in Textile Technology & Textile Chemistry started.
  • 1988: M.Tech Textile Technology (regular) started, part-time M.Tech Textile Technology & Textile Chemistry discontinued.
  • 2005: M.Tech Textile Chemistry (regular) & B.Tech Textile Engg. started.
  • 2006: Became autonomous and renamed as Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute (UPTTI) under Society act.
  • 2012: Academic autonomy from UGC, and implemented from 2016-17 continued till date.
